Rescuing Your Most Important Relationships

Emotional Maturity

One of my clients had been having trouble with some co- workers, and specifically asked me to write about emotional maturity in this month’s newsletter.  They wanted to know how the emotional maturity level of an individual could affect a relationship. It does seem fair to say that as our bodies mature, so do our emotions. But is this really true? One definition of maturity is this: Maturity is the ability to stick with a project or a situation until it is finished, the capacity to face unpleasantness, frustration, discomfort and defeat without complaint or collapse. It is the ability to make a decision and stand by it. How does this fit into our relationship with each other? Looking at ourselves and our responsibilities in our relationships requires us to live up to the responsibilities and be dependable. Ask yourself this – can you:

  • Accept reality as it is
  • Deal with losses and regrets
  • Solve problems quickly
  • Have a capacity and capability to change
  • Maintain integrity in the face of temptation

Read on for more about emotional maturity and how to get it.
